Hair Tricks

2 min read

For two years, the same four hair tricks have dominated every feed: rice water rinses for growth, cold rinses for shine, overnight oil slugging for repair, and apple-cider-vinegar rinses for buildup. Each promises a single-event fix you can see by the next wash. It almost never works that way. You can tell whether any of these will help you in ten seconds, before you reach for the bottle. Wet a small section near your ear. Bend it gently between your thumb and finger, and let go.

If it bounces back to its own shape, you're balanced. Skip the hack. Almost any rinse, mask, or overnight treatment you add tonight will tip you out of balance, and not in the direction you were hoping.

Snap and stiffness mean too much protein on the strand. Skip the rice water rinse this week. It will push you further into snap territory, and you'll see it in the ends within a month. A regular conditioning wash is what you need.

If the strand stretches and stays limp, the opposite is true: too much water inside relative to structure. Rice water once at the next wash will fill the gap, and your ends will hold a shape they haven't held in weeks. Skip overnight oil for the next two washes; heavy oil on a moisture-heavy strand will sit flat instead of nourishing.

One more read while wet. Drag your nail slowly down a strand near the mid-length. If it feels coated rather than just slick, that's film building up across washes. What a cold rinse cannot lift, an apple-cider-vinegar rinse actually does. The mild acid loosens deposited conditioner and silicone. The hair's outer layer has no temperature trigger; any flattening from a cold rinse comes from the conditioner already on the lengths, not the temperature.

One last read, this one on the second day. Look at how different your roots and ends behave. Oily roots with dry ends mean scalp oil hasn't traveled down. That is what overnight slugging is for, on the ends only, never on the scalp. If your hair is fine, halve the amount of oil. It will weigh you down for two washes otherwise.

Most of these take ten seconds at the sink; the roots-and-ends read just needs a look on day two. The hack does not work on the hair the bottle imagines you have. It works on the hair these tests just showed you.

Limp, rubbery strands that stretch instead of snapping mean moisture overload, not too little. The bend test that reveals it, and a two-to-three-week reset to rebalance protein and moisture.
